“For Advanced Exercise Psychology (KPE 330), we partnered with community organizations interested in physical activity programming to challenge students to apply exercise psychology principles within the broader community. Throughout the course, the community partners presented the scope of their organization and students engaged with the partners to develop the physical activity program. Students tailored the physical activity intervention to the needs of the population, as well as considered the feasibility of their program within the organization. Finally, students were asked to present in front of the community partners at the end of the semester on their program.
Students were active participants in creating knowledge in this course. Students found the community-engaged learning piece of the course to be the most valuable aspect of the course. They enjoyed the opportunity to develop and present a physical activity program to a community organization that was feasible and impactful. Furthermore, the community partners expressed the value of having this partnership as many of the physical activity programs developed can be easily adopted within their organization.”
